Elastic Allocation of Docker Containers in Cloud Environments

چکیده

Docker containers wrap up a piece of software together with everything it needs for the execution and enable to easily run it on any machine. For their execution in the Cloud, we need to identify an elastic set of virtual machines that can accommodate those containers, while considering the diversity of their requirements. In this paper, we briefly describe our formulation of the Elastic provisioning of Virtual machines for Container Deployment (EVCD), which takes explicitly into account the heterogeneity of container requirements and virtual machine resources. Afterwards, we evaluate the EVCD formulation with the aim of demonstrating its flexibility in optimizing multiple QoS metrics.

Value-Based Allocation of Docker Containers

Recently, an increasing number of public cloud vendors added Containers as a Service (CaaS) to their service portfolio. This is an adequate answer to the growing popularity of Docker, a software technology allowing Linux containers to run independently on a host in an isolated environment. As any software can be deployed in a container, the nature of containers differs and thus assorted allocat...

Container-based virtual elastic clusters

eScience demands large-scale computing clusters to support the efficient execution of resource-intensive scientific applications. Virtual Machines (VMs) have introduced the ability to provide customizable execution environments, at the expense of performance loss for applications. However, in recent years, containers have emerged as a light-weight virtualization technology compared to VMs. Inde...

Four-Fold Auto-Scaling on a Contemporary Deployment Platform Using Docker Containers

With the advent of Docker, it becomes popular to bundle Web applications (apps) and their libraries into lightweight linux containers and offer them to a wide public by deploying them in the cloud. Compared to previous approaches, like deploying apps in cloud-provided virtual machines (VMs), the use of containers allows faster start-up and less overhead. However, having containers inside VMs ma...

Elastic Spatial Query Processing in OpenStack Cloud Computing Environment for Time-Constraint Data Analysis

Geospatial big data analysis (GBDA) is extremely significant for time-constraint applications such as disaster response. However, the time-constraint analysis is not yet a trivial task in the cloud computing environment. Spatial query processing (SQP) is typical computation-intensive and indispensable for GBDA, and the spatial range query, join query, and the nearest neighbor query algorithms a...

HPC Containers in Use

Linux containers in the commercial world are changing the landscape for application development and deployments. Container technologies are also making inroads into HPC environments, as exemplified by NERSC’s Shifter and LBL’s Singularity. While the first generation of HPC containers offers some of the same benefits as the existing open container frameworks, like CoreOS or Docker, they do not a...
